Rhinoplasty, also called "plastic surgery of the nose or a "nose job," is a very popular procedure that can make a profound difference not only in facial appearance but also in self-esteem. The aesthetic improvements that can be made include decreasing or increasing the size of the nose, altering the tip or bridge of the nose, and narrowing or changing the shape of the nostril.

Although rhinoplasty is most often sought for cosmetic reasons, it can also help correct structural defects that may cause breathing problems.

Right Candidates

Nose reshaping candidates should be at least in their mid-teens - 14 to 15 for girls, and slightly older for boys. At these ages, the nasal bone has fully grown, and the shape of the nose has stabilized. Patients with realistic expectations, who are looking for improvement and not perfection are the ideal candidates for this surgery.

Every nose is different, and so are the possibilities and limitations to reshape it. A thorough discussion and evaluation preoperatively with the operating surgeon is a must to know the expectation of the patient out of surgery and how much those goals can be achieved in reality.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty Surgery

When preparing for your rhinoplasty procedure, it's a good idea to prepare yourself mentally for the physical change that you'll be going through, as well as the recovery time that will be necessary.

Type of anesthesia - General anesthesia is preferred

Procedure

Plastic surgery of the nose begins when the rhinoplasty surgeon makes an incision either inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or across the skin (open rhinoplasty)that separates the nostrils (this skin is called the columella). The cartilage and bone that make up the framework of the nose are then exposed and sculpted to create the desired shape and profile. The plastic surgeon then stitches the skin back into place to complete the nose surgery.

Rhinoplasty surgery generally lasts about 3-4 hours. Some corrections can be done on an outpatient basis whereas others require a day stay in hospital.

After your surgery

For the first 24hrs, your face will be a little swollen, and you might have to breathe through your mouth. Pain medication will be given to make you comfortable. Swelling and bruising around eyes may increase first and then start to decrease after 2-3 days. Most of it settles down in 2-3 weeks. Some subtle swelling( unnoticeable to anyone except your surgeon and you) might remain for some months. The final result of rhinoplasty may not be apparent for a year or more

Specific Guidelines: Patients are able to get back to work in a week or 10days. Specific guidelines will be given as to/how to gradually get back to your routine like avoiding strenuous exercise for 2-3 weeks, avoid rubbing or trauma over your nose for six weeks, Wearing of glasses once healing occurs. A frequent follow-up visit to check your progress is advised.

What should I know about my results?

The vast majority of rhinoplasty patients who choose qualified surgeons to perform their surgery are satisfied with their results. In many cases, very slight changes to the structure of the nose - sometimes as little as a few millimeters - can produce drastic and pleasing results. To ensure the greatest chance of satisfactory healing following your procedure, there are several steps you should take following your surgery.
