Botox

There has been a revolutionary approach for facial rejuvenation over decades using modalities like skincare, skin resurfacing, soft tissue augmentation, and surgical intervention. Botulinum Toxin or Botox is the wonder drug of the last decade combating cutaneous signs of aging (wrinkles, frown lines, neckbands) and hyperhidrosis through cosmetic denervation. Botox is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes striated muscles by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction.

The right candidate for Botox

Those who want prevention and amelioration of dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles in motion) such as: crow's feet (lateral ocular canthi rhytides), vertical (glabellar frown) or wrinkles on nose (Bunny nose), upper lip rhytides, angle of the mouth, pebbly chin, nasolabial fold, jawline, venus rings (horizontal neck rhytides), turkey neck (vertical platysmal bands), are ideal candidates for this procedure.

Is Botox safe?

Yes, it is generally a safe procedure. Contraindications include neuromuscular disorders, e.g., myasthenia gravis. It is of paramount importance to avoid botulinum toxin injections in patients with a neuromuscular disorder. Many such disorders are inherited, and hence, it is mandatory to rule out a family history of the same. Since the teratogenicity of BTX has not yet been established, it is contraindicated during pregnancy as well as breastfeeding.

Duration of effect?

It takes three to five days for the effect of botox to begin. The results last anywhere from 3 to 6 months when it has to be repeated.

Filler

Fillers are the best tool to defy aging signs of the skin. Fillers can effectively:

  1. Restore fullness to cheeks, areas under the eyes, and deep creases.
  2. Diminish scars.
  3. Erase fine lines.
  4. Plump lips.
  5. Lifting of the brow.
  6. Rejuvenated hands.

Right candidate for Filler

The use of dermal fillers depends on the nature of the product; for example, some fillers are suited for superficial wrinkles and folds, whereas still others are best used for deeper wrinkles or scars. By and large, some of the common indications are - depressed scars (post-surgical, traumatic, resulting from acne or other diseases), wrinkles and creases caused by facial expression and aging, lip sculpting, dermal atrophy from disease or injection of steroids, angular cheilitis, periocular melanoses, and sunken eyes.

Is Filler safe?

Usually, fillers are safe provided done with proper precautions. Contraindications to using fillers include positive skin testing, patients with autoimmune diseases, active local disease like acne, keloidal tendency, and unrealistic expectations.

Is fillers application painful?

It can be made absolutely painless by use of surface anesthetic agents.

Post-procedure precautions?

  1. The area should not be touched for 6 hours after treatment.
  2. Make-up should be avoided for 12 hours.
  3. The patient should avoid extremes of heat, cold or UV radiation.
  4. Sauna bath should be avoided for one week.
  5. Chemical peels, laser treatment, etc. should be spaced out for at least two weeks to avoid inflammation of injection site.

How much time does the effect of fillers last?

Repeat injections are spaced after 9-12 months or longer depending upon the longevity of the material, site of injection, and the technique used.

Chemical Peels (Chemoexfoliation)

A chemical peel is a body treatment technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin to rejuvenate it and give you back the much-desired glow and look. In a chemical peel, a medically prepared chemical solution is used over the skin that makes the dead skin to first slough off and then completely peels them off the skin.

The right candidate for Chemical Peels

if you have any of the following problems - acne (post-acne hyperpigmentation, superficial scarring following acne, acne excoriate, comedolytic acne), dyschromia (melasma, fixed drug eruption, melanosis, freckles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), dilated pores, fine wrinkling, sun-damaged and aging skin, superficial scars.

Is Chemical Peels safe?

Yes, provided done in expert hands with reasonable precautions. Contraindications include active infection (herpes labialis/bacterial), open cuts, unrealistic expectations.

Planning your peeling

Priming: Preparing the skin for a peel is an important concept as it helps to achieve better results. This can be achieved by the use of certain topical drugs at least two weeks prior to the planned day of peel.

Is Chemical Peels painful?

Peeling is a relatively painless office procedure and has been shown to yield excellent cosmetic results in properly selected cases of hypermelanosis, hyperpigmentation, and photoaging.

Post-procedure precautions?

Avoid sunlight. Use sunscreen/ umbrella when outdoors. At least sun protection is required for six weeks post-procedure completion.

Lasers

Today's lasers can diminish many signs of aging - from early wrinkles and age spots to deep lines and spider veins. A laser procedure often can be performed in less than an hour and may require little or no downtime.

Numerous lasers and light devices are used to rejuvenate the skin. These devices are generally grouped into the following categories:

  1. Non-ablative laser rejuvenation - No downtime. Best for early signs of aging.
  2. Intense pulsed light (IPL) - Not a laser, this light therapy penetrates deeper into the skin than a non-ablative laser. IPL does not injure the surface of the skin, so there is usually no downtime. IPL can improve skin texture and color as well as reduce pore size.
  3. Fractional laser rejuvenation - Offers deeper rejuvenation. Recovery time is short — best for diminishing signs of aging such as age spots, wrinkles, and skin discoloration.
  4. Ablative laser resurfacing - Heats the skin to cause a visible wound, which means some downtime for recovery. Effective for deeper wrinkles and diminishing aging caused by years of unprotected sun exposure.
